TYPES OF INSULIN

Your doctor will help decide which insulin is right for you. However, one thing is true of all types of insulin. Regardless of which type of insulin you need, it can play an important role in your diabetes treatment program to help lower your blood sugar.

RAPID-ACTING INSULIN

  • Helps lower blood sugar for 2–4 hours
  • Often used with a longer-acting insulin
  • Typically taken before you eat

SHORT-ACTING INSULIN

  • Helps lower blood sugar for 3 to 6 hours
  • Often used with a longer-acting insulin
  • Typically taken before you eat

INTERMEDIATE-ACTING INSULIN

  • Helps lower blood sugar for about 12–18 hours
  • Typically taken two times a day

LONG-ACTING INSULIN, INCLUDING LANTUS®

  • Helps lower blood sugar over a 24-hour period
  • Helps manage your blood sugar between meals and overnight
  • Taken once per day
