Long-Acting Insulin. 24-Hour Control.
It may seem hard at first to keep track of insulin shots. LANTUS® 24-hour insulin,
along with a proper diet and a rapid-acting insulin, may help lower blood sugar
for children six years and older with type 1 diabetes.
LANTUS® is flexible
You and your healthcare team can decide what time of day your child should take
LANTUS® so it doesn't have to interrupt any of his or her activities. Once
you pick the best time for your child to use LANTUS®, he or she takes it once
a day at the same time each day, along with a rapid-acting insulin at mealtimes.
LANTUS® lasts 24 hours
When you think about all the things you need to manage your child's diabetes,
like rapid-acting insulin, carbohydrate counting, and daily exercise, consider LANTUS®
as an option for his or her long-acting (basal) insulin. LANTUS® provides similar
blood sugar control to NPH or premix insulin. While each shot of NPH or premix insulin
lasts 10 to 18 hours, LANTUS® is the only 24-hour insulin approved exclusively
for use once a day. When used as part of an overall diabetes treatment plan with
a rapid-acting insulin, LANTUS® helps control blood sugar all day and night
with one shot a day at the same time each day.
LANTUS® works steadily
NPH and premix can "peak" several hours after injection. To balance that peak, your
child may have to eat whether or not he or she is hungry. But LANTUS® works
like the insulin that's made in the body of someone without diabetes. It's
released at a relatively steady, constant rate, with no pronounced peak. So when
your child uses LANTUS®, along with a rapid-acting insulin at mealtimes, he
or she doesn't have to eat to balance out a peak.
A backup option for the pump
If your child uses an insulin pump, there may be times when he or she needs a backup
basal insulin – if there's a problem with the pump, for instance. LANTUS®
24-hour insulin, injected with a pen or syringe, can be used as a backup. When your
child takes time off from the pump, LANTUS®, along with injections of a rapid-acting
insulin, can be there to help keep blood sugar in control all day long.
